Intro & background

YouTube already has a “Playlist” feature for organizing videos, but it’s not practical for categorizing subscriptions.

There’s no native feature for users to group subscribed channels (either on mobile or desktop) — it requires third-party extensions or apps.

And if users want an advanced grouping experience, they often need to pay for it — e.g., Patreon. They also need to learn how to use each tool separately.e development of a mutual fund (MF) application, is expected to be completed whin

Problem

  • Users subscribe to many channels but can’t organize them — leading to cluttered, distracting feeds.

  • No native feature to group subscriptions; users must scroll endlessly to find what they want.

  • Existing tools (e.g., Playlists, extensions) are either limited or require extra setup/cost.

Solution

  • Introduce “Subscription Categories” allowing users to group channels (e.g., News, Finance, Fashion).

  • Enable quick access to preferred groups directly from Subscription / Home / You tabs.

  • Simplify navigation — watch only what matters most, without distraction.

UX Focus

  • Simplify navigation — watch only what matters most, without distraction.

Features highlights

After analyzing YouTube’s interface and Patreon extensions, I defined the scope of the new ‘Subscription’ features and designed them to seamlessly adapt to YouTube’s existing UI and visual style. The features are as follows:

  • Create and manage subscription groups — allow users to organize their followed channels into personalized groups.

  • Remove channels from a specific group — easily edit or clean up subscriptions within each group.

  • Multi-group assignment — enable one channel to belong to multiple subscription groups simultaneously.

  • Filter by media type and group — provide filtering options to refine content by category or group for faster access.

Task prototype

After defining the key features, I created usability test scenarios to observe how real users interacted with the product. The goal was to understand whether they could use each feature intuitively and complete their tasks without confusion.

When users encountered difficulties or failed to achieve their goals, these insights became valuable feedback for reviewing and refining the design.

KeyTakeaway

Sometimes, simply observing the everyday objects or applications we regularly use — and noticing areas we’d like to improve or enhance — can be a great way to practice logical and analytical thinking from a UX/UI perspective. Even though this was just a small personal analysis project, I realized that if YouTube had this feature, it would truly make the user experience even better.
